The Zubin Foundation | Securing a good start for students of Chinese as an additional language at KG

CALHK

The report includes:

  • Linguistic and racial segregation in HK kindergartens

  • NCS students start KG with no prior knowledge of Chinese, by the end of K3 many school principals say their level of Chinese will not allow them to thrive in Primary 1.

  • Reading and writing present the greatest challenges

  • Lack of family support

  • Lack of exposure to Chinese outside of the classroom

  • Few resources to help NCS students

  • Some KGs make their own ad hoc versions of romanisation to help children and parents remember how to pronounce the characters
