SCMP | A history of Chinese Second Language Learning

A long article about the history of learning Chinese as a second language. The story begins in 1759 with Emperor Qianlong, who forbids his citizens from helping foreigners learn Chinese. The article speeds through the advent of online learning platforms and useful study tools. Interesting that the interviewees, from different language learning eras, view the dictionary being a core tool for Chinese learning. Yet, dictionary use - bizarrely - is not encouraged in the local HK school system. The author finally makes the point that learning Chinese comes with many challenges and the issues are not purely linguistic .
